JAMES BLUNT RIDES THE NEW MONSTER 1100 AROUND THE STREETS OF ROME

A "Roman Holiday" for James Blunt. The popular British singer, who has sold 11 million CDs, recently spent a few days in the Italian capital where he was able to fulfil two life-long ambitions. The singer had often dreamed of running a newspaper and he was given the opportunity to do just that by "Metro" (the international free paper, which has 84 editions published in 23 countries across Europe, North and South America and Asia, with an international readership of more than 20 million). He was made "Editor for a day" of the Rome edition, where he spent the whole day working alongside the editor and staff of Metro Italia, as well as Sakari Pitkanen, the International Manager of Metro International, deciding on the stories and layout of his own special issue.

Yet running a newspaper was not the only dream to come true. The singer-songwriter behind "You're beautiful" took advantage of his stay in Rome to tour the city, riding a genuine Italian icon, none other than the brand new Ducati Monster 1100 S. The British rock star and avid motorcyclist rode around the streets of Rome with a group of biker friends from Ducati Roma, savouring every delicious moment provided by the new jewel in the crown to be created by the Bologna-based manufacturer.

"The Ducati Monster has always fascinated me - stated Blunt at the end of his ride - and this new version is really gorgeous. I had a lot of fun on the streets of Rome and enjoyed spending an afternoon in the company of some dedicated Ducati fans.

" The new Monster 1100 S features a beautiful new rear swinging arm, cutting edge components and a chassis set-up worthy of its increased power and more distinctly 'sports' feel. Add the even more radical, eye-catching look and you get a bike that goes straight to the top of the Ducati Monster family.

DUCATI PRESENTS ITS NEW MODEL RANGE 2009

THE NEW DUCATI MODELS ARE MAKING THEIR DEBUT BEFORE THE HUGE CROWDS OF EICMA. THE GLOBAL PREVIEW OF THE NEW DUCATI STREETFIGHTER WAS A GREAT SUCCESS WHILE THE SUPERBIKE FAMILY WELCOMES THE NEW 1198 AND THE LIMITED EDITION 1098 R 'BAYLISS'. THE 1100 MONSTER COMPLETES THE NEW ADDITIONS FOR 2009.

A real, live runway, as those used during the Milan fashion week, set the scene for the entrance of the 2009 new additions in the Bologna manufacturer's range. These dream bikes are the result of Italian genius and creativity and will capture the attention of everyone visiting EICMA 2008, Milan's international motorcycle show being held at the city's international exhibition centre in Rho, from 4 to 9 November. From here they will go on to setting new standards as they arrive on the international market.

A press conference brimming with information, technical details and new unveilings was held prior to the official opening of the show. Gabriele Del Torchio, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, met members of the international press and presented the amazing sporting and sales achievements that the Bologna company has recently recorded, as evidence of the Italian manufacturer's strength and performance.

Before the 2009 models were let loose, the press was also shown the new Ducati logo, an evolution of the historic brand name, which now includes a new red shield featuring a new graphic symbol, alongside the classic Ducati script. This replaces the previous, celebrated, stylised letter 'D' and makes this motorcycling logo even more eye-catching and unique in its representation of passion, competition and performance.

"Confidence and passion are the two key words for the coming year. - said Mr Del Torchio as he opened the conference - These words are directly inspired by the results we have achieved in 2008, during which we have continued to grow, despite the shrinking markets, to the extent that our sales have increased by 25% in just two years. Our confidence and passion come from having identified a series of strategic activities that we at Ducati are working on both internally and externally, in order to offer our customers all around the world increasingly innovative, reliable and distinctive products, which are guaranteed to make their dreams come true. We are convinced that by working in this direction, as we have underlined in our company mission, we can generate a positive future for our shareholders and our customers, as ambassadors of Italian products adding prestige to our worldwide standing.

The amazing new products that we have brought to EICMA 2008 represent the fruit of our technological research and development, which Ducati expresses through its updated range, confirming how much this company is focused on the product as well as supporting and sustaining our sales targets for the next few years."

Claudio Domenicali, General Product Manager of Ducati Motor Holding, introduced the major and eagerly awaited new Ducati products for 2009.

The real star of the event was the new Ducati Streetfighter, which is already among the top contenders for the title "best bike of the show".

Stripped to the bare essentials, its combination of state-of-the-art race technology, exposed styling and cultured design takes Ducati's big naked concept to the very top of the fighter food chain.

With 155hp of awesome Ducati L-Twin muscle harnessed in a stripped-down, super-light bike that packs more punch for its weight than any other contender, this fighter is gloves-off and ready for action.

Whether laying down the miles on open roads or ripping up the urban asphalt, no other bike in town will roll with the same stylish fire-power. This ultimate naked will be ripping-up the asphalt from Spring 2009.

Ducati Streetfighter is also available in a "S" version equipped with Öhlins suspension, lightweight forged Marchesini wheels, carbon fibre parts and a street-going Ducati Traction Control.

For 2009, the Ducati Superbike family has two major new additions, both made absolutely special by their engine size as well as equipment and components - these are two bikes that are sure to carry on and increase the success achieved with the celebrated 1098.

The new DUCATI 1198, while maintaining the same look as the previous 1098, is in fact a totally new bike. The 1198, which produces a powerful 170hp (125kW) from its new Testastretta Evoluzione engine, and has a dry weight of just 171kg (377lb), incorporates all of the World Superbike technology derived directly from the 2008 World Championship winning race bike of Troy Bayliss.

The Ducati Data Analysis, supplied as standard equipment on the 1198 S model, enables the retrieval and analysis of data collected from a track session or road trip. The innovative road-going Ducati Traction Control (DTC) system monitors front and rear wheel speeds to detect rear wheel-spin under acceleration and electronically reduces engine power to restore traction. DTC, which offers a choice of eight settings, provides a considerable increase in safety during mid-corner acceleration.

EICMA is also the first major opportunity to celebrate the great sporting results Ducati has achieved in 2008. Second place in the MotoGP series and Superbike World Championship titles, both for riders' and manufacturers', thanks to the victory of Troy Bayliss - in the debut year of the 1098 F08.

After his resounding victory, Troy announced his retirement from motorcycle racing and Ducati decided to celebrate his career by producing the limited edition '1098 R Bayliss', a worthy conclusion to a career during which he won three World Championship titles aboard three different generations of Ducati Superbikes.

Ducati add the new Monster 1100 and 1100 S to the 2009 range, both icons of Italian excellence. Dedicated to those who want to make the ultimate expression, this jewel of style and performance is powered by the charismatic two-valve 1100cc Desmodromic twin-cylinder engine, famous the world over for its legendary torque and acceleration.

The 2009 range is completed by the new pearl white colour for the Hypermotard 1100 and Multistrada 1100 S and the new black with white stripe livery version of the GT 1000, available also in a special Touring version.

In addition, Ducati presents many new accessories, special components and a new collection of Ducati clothing.

To create - through the application of unique technology and superb design - the best sports motorcycles in the world: this, then, is the overriding goal that has powered the Ducati brand for over sixty years.

DUCATI AT INTERMOT WITH THE NEW MONSTER 1100 AND

THE GT 1000 TOURING. PLUS THE PRESENTATION OF AN

INTERESTING SAFETY INITIATIVE.

Cologne (Germany) - an exhibition area of 800 square metres (hall 8, stand F59, will house the Ducati world at the 2008 INTERMOT show in Cologne. With bikes, accessories and clothing on show, the Bologna-based company will present many new products for 2009 at this important international trade show.

The undeniable star of the show will be the highest performing version of the "naked", the Monster 1100, the result of "made in Borgo-Panigale" technological know-how.

Dedicated to those who appreciate the extreme, the jewel that combines style, sporting excellence and performance is equipped with the 1100 cc Desmodromic L-twin engine, famous the world over for its torque and breathtaking acceleration.

Characterised by a new and beautifully-shaped single sided swing-arm, high level of componentry, race-oriented chassis and 15 years of evolution, the new Monster 1100 - which it would probably be more accurate to call "The absolute Monster" - takes its place at the top of the Monster range, which continues to grow after 15 years of success.

Another interesting product to be exhibited at the show is the new GT 1000 Touring, an evolution of the Sport Classic family in terms of its components and accessories. The bike, produced in gloss black, has it classic looks accentuated with chrome handlebars, luggage rack and front and rear fenders.

The new colour option for the Hypermotard 1100 and Multistrada 1100 S, a pearl white, is the final innovation to be presented by Ducati at INTERMOT, alongside the whole of the current collection.

INTERMOT is also the first public opportunity that Ducati has had to be able to celebrate its recently won 2008 World Superbike titles - rider and constructor - titles that Troy Bayliss brought home from last week's round at Magny-Cours.

Troy's race bike, as well as Casey Stoner's GP bike, will of course be a central feature of the stand in Cologne.

"We have decided to strengthen our presence at Cologne", stated Gabriele Del Torchio, Ducati's CEO, during the show's opening press conference, "because we understand the importance of this trade show, the show that opens the season of European industry exhibitions. Our strong presence here also demonstrates our commitment with regard to the German clients as well as clarifying our intention to grow in the German market, the second most important European market for Ducati. For these reasons we have decided to present the Monster 1100 and the new GT 1000 Touring for the first time here."

Gabriele Del Torchio also commented on the results of the first six months of 2008, stating that, "Despite the slowing of the motorcycle market across the world, with sales in Europe falling by more than 7%, Ducati, thanks to its products and to the quality of its distribution networks has grown by roughly 8% with regard to the previous year."

During the opening press conference a new safety campaign was also highlighted, with Ducati announcing their intention to add a new back protector to every motorcycle sold in Europe.

"We are among those to have signed up to the campaign promoted by the European Community, "25 lives to save"", said Gabriele Del Torchio. "Ducati, along with its sales networks, is a strong believer in safety, something that we always have in mind when developing the new bikes, the technical clothing and protections. In order to consolidate this effort, we have decided that, from today, every bike that we sell in Europe will come with a high quality back protector, that not only bears the correct standards of homologation but also raises the safety levels for all of the Ducatisti."

INTERMOT is open to the public until Sunday 12th October.

DUCATI MONSTER BREAKS WORLD RECORD

Ducati Motor Holding is proud to inform you that our legendary Ducati Monster broke the Guinness Book 'Largest Parade of Motorcycles of the Same Brand and Type' Record. This happened last Sunday, September 21st.

Under the sunny skies of Belgium the small town of Hamme-Moerzeke shook on its grounds when 405 Monsteristi started their engines to ride around town. The parade, which was organised by the 'Monster Owners Belgium' Club, was almost 200 bikes larger than the record which was set in 2003 (with 207 Yamaha TDM's). A crushing result, which was made possible by enthusiast riders who came from Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg, France, Great-Britain, Germany, Romania and other countries to form one Ducati family.

The World Record attempt was part of the annual MOB Monster Day, which celebrated its 5th anniversary this year. The event attracted over 1500 visitors who saw Ducati setting another historical result, which can be added to its rich history.

DUCATI MONSTER 1100 and 1100S

ABSOLUTE MONSTER

The arrival of the new 1100 and 1100 S now increases the size of the Monster family, a family that redefines the naked motorcycle and stakes its claim as the new icon of Italian excellence. Dedicated to those who want to make the ultimate expression, this jewel of style and performance is powered by the charismatic two-valve 1100cc Desmodromic twin-cylinder engine, famous the world over for its legendary torque and acceleration.

When you choose to ride the Monster, you are not simply choosing a bike but an entire lifestyle. It is an extension of your own character, something that can be shared or kept for yourself but either way, a desire to experience the exhilaration of naked power as you ride this international motorcycling icon.

With its new single-sided aluminium swingarm, high level of componentry, race-oriented chassis and 15 years of evolution, the Monster 1100 now takes its place at the head of the Monster family.

The 'less-is-more' philosophy behind all Monsters underlines Ducati's never-ending pursuit of genuinely compact, high performance motorcycles, but these new models have succeeded in being even more 'pared down' than their predecessors. The Monster 1100 weighs a whole 8kg (17.6lb) less than the already lightweight S2R 1000, making it by far the lightest bike in its category. Every single component has been redesigned and redeveloped in order that form would follow function. With any details detracting from the Monster concept being eliminated, the 'less-is-more' also means 'less-is-Monster'. Less weight plus more torque equals fun-filled riding.

Today's Monster family is the result of constant evolution in design and technology. The new, powerful and breathtaking top-of-the-range models boast attractive ergonomics and present pure style and charisma, while preserving the essence of the original naked bike concept.

MONSTER 1100

The new Monster 1100 design perfectly balances sports performance, riding pleasure and stunning looks. Its seductive line is the product of a Ducati philosophy where form and function combine to create the naked bike par excellence. Its essential yet painstakingly perfected design is the result of the all-Italian motorcycling tradition of creativity. The new Monster 1100 is the bike for motorcyclists who know exactly what they want and whose lifestyle revolves around their love of riding.

Pure riding pleasure is guaranteed with super-light and agile handling characteristics combined with the exceptional torque of the Desmo engine and the dependable competition-level braking system. The Monster 1100 is more than just a bike, it is an extension of your own personality. The Monster's essential design and unique sound sets it aside from all others.

CHASSIS SET-UP

In search of the perfect corner

At just 169kg (373lb), the Monster 1100 is the lightest bike in its class.

The exceptional handling, combined with 10.5kgm (75.9lb-ft) of torque from the Ducati Desmo engine, results in a pure, adrenalin-filled ride.

Every single component has been created to satisfy a Ducati rider's needs and provide unrivalled agility and handling. That is why Ducati engineers, designers and testers have aimed for the best possible set-up and the Monster is able to ensure the best handling of all naked bikes.

With a 40mm higher ride-height than the 696, the increased ground clearance of the Monster 1100 enables impressive lean angles, letting you explore the sports side of this new naked bike to the full. The extremely lightweight aluminium alloy five Y-spoke wheels reduce unsprung weight and improve agility. The 3.50x17 front wheel is fitted with a 120/70ZR tyre while the rear 5.50x17 wheel has a 180/55ZR. The result is lightweight, precise steering that is extremely responsive at all speeds while giving the vehicle exceptional stability.

The steering lock has been improved to a considerable 64 degrees overall by using the extra distance allowed by cleverly shaped air ducts in the fuel tank covers which feed the new ten litre airbox. The sports feel of the bike is further accentuated by the new aluminium tapered handlebars.

Suspension

The 43mm fully adjustable Showa forks and Sachs rising-rate rear suspension unit, with adjustable spring pre-load and return damping, offer sufficient personalisation to suit all riding styles and provide that perfect 'feel'. Using the proven 'cantilever' system, the steeply angled rear unit compresses in a movement non-linear to the rear swingarm radius, thus achieving a progressive action. This enables easy access to the spring pre-load and rebound damping adjuster, while eliminating the weight of the rocker-arm mechanism.

High performance Trellis frame

The Trellis frame, developed in conjunction with Ducati Corse and using the Desmosedici short frame concept, uses the same tube diameter and thickness as the 1098 R. The rear subframe is also derived from Desmosedici RR technology using cast aluminium to create a sturdy and yet lightweight structure for rider and passenger. The lightweight Trellis frame not only boasts unequalled rigidity, but its simple and essential lines perfectly link up the aluminium footpeg assemblies and single-sided swingarm in pure Ducati style.

Maximum control braking

The power and charisma of the new Monster 1100 can rely upon a best-in-category braking system that provides excellent, precise and controllable braking performance.

The vigorous Brembo system is the direct result of Ducati Corse racing experience, featuring radial pumps with adjustable levers feeding four-piston radial calipers which grip twin 320mm discs. The rear brake uses a 2-piston caliper operating on a 245mm disc.

Single-sided swingarm

The beautifully shaped single-sided swingarm gives the Monster a 'tough' look while ensuring higher rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced road holding. The swingarm is chill-cast using aluminium in its most noble form. Gravity cast and heat treated, the component achieves the best mechanical characteristics as well as reduced final weight for improved handling.

INNOVATION AND STYLE

The Monster 1100 takes its place at the top of Monster family, inheriting and developing the groundbreaking features that took the 696 to the top just weeks after its launch.

The new colour schemes have elegant combinations including grey with red frame while the racing gold wheels of the 'S' version accentuate the sports side of the new, naked Ducati.

HEADLIGHT: The triple-parabola headlamp uses the latest optical technology to provide a deep, wide beam which makes riding at night both easier and safer. The highly advanced construction of the assembly provides one of the most compact headlamps available.

AIRBOX AND FUEL TANK: The use of advanced moulding techniques have not only enabled greater fuel capacity but also a larger airbox. The new fuel tank now holds 15 litres (3.8 US gal) while the airbox contains a power-enhancing 10 litres of air.

MIRRORS: The rear view mirrors have been completely redesigned, making them lower, smoother and more aerodynamic while ensuring a clear view to the rear. Their design accentuates the curves and lines of the handlebars and fuel tank.

LED REAR LIGHT: The minimalist spirit of the Monster and the desire to reduce weight to a minimum were the reasons behind the choice of an LED lighting system for the rear.

GULL-WING FORK CLAMPS: Just like the race-winning Ducatis, the Monster 1100 is fitted with extremely robust fork clamps. Their 'gull-wing' shape design achieves exceptional torsional strength.

INSTRUMENTS: The digital instrumentation enables you to keep an eye on your Monster 1100's performance at all times, thanks to the many viewing options offered by the on-board computer. The display, which is scrollable from the left-hand switch gear, is made even more attractive and easier to read thanks to a new white screen back lighting. Information includes: service reminders, oil temperature, air temperature, speedometer, lap time, fuel reserve warning light, low oil pressure warning light, indicators, over-rev warning light, neutral position and immobilizer. The instrumentation is also ready to accommodate the DDA (Ducati Data Analyser) system.

ENGINE

Desmodromic charisma

The Monster 1100 power unit is the legendary 1100cc, air cooled, Dual Spark L-Twin engine whose 95hp gives it that unmistakable Ducati sound. Developed for an incredibly flexible power delivery, the 1100 Desmodromic engine provides the rider with enough torque to exit the most challenging of corners. The impressive 10.5kgm (75.9lb-ft) of torque, typical of the Ducati L-Twin engines, will excite with every twist of the throttle.

The two-valve engine on the new Monster 1100 features an all-new crankcase which significantly reduces overall engine weight. They are produced using the same innovative Vacural technology that Ducati previously applied only to Supersport models such as the 848.

This method of production relies on vacuum die-casting, which improves the quality of the casting by avoiding porosity, air pockets and oxidation. This enables greater dimensional accuracy and higher ductility for the aluminium alloy. Ducati designers have drawn upon the benefits of this innovative process, redefining the conformation and thickness of the sides on the new crankcase using finite element simulations (FEM) and tests, which resulted in achieving the required reliability standards as well as attaining a significant weight reduction of 3kg (6.6lb) compared to previous versions of the 1100cc engines.

The new geometry of the crankcase, their black cylinders and the new carbon grey finish on the cam covers give the Monster 1100 engine a brand new look.

To help control the 95hp of powerful twin-cylinder engine, an entirely new engine control system has been adopted based on a combined alfa-n and speed-density strategy for carburation adjustment.

Used alongside the traditional alfa-n system, the speed-density strategy makes it possible to optimise engine carburation, in particular when using small throttle openings. This ensures a greater control over the torque delivered and improved control of harmful emissions.

The 1100 engine boasts a 98mm bore and a 71.5mm stroke, delivering 95hp at 7500rpm and an impressive torque of 10.5kgm (79.5lb-ft) at 6000rpm.

The excellent torque and power values of the most advanced air-cooled L-Twin cylinder engine ever designed by Ducati combined with the exceptional light weight of the motorcycle accentuate the riding pleasure and charisma of the new Monster 1100.

To underline the sports side of the bike, the new Monster 1100 is fitted with Ducati's very own dry clutch.

Exhaust system

The Monster 1100 has a specially designed exhaust system which features an electronically controlled exhaust valve that enables the use of silencers similar to those of the 696. The exhaust system on the 1100 has one Lambda probe dedicated to each cylinder, enabling precise fuelling for a smoother power delivery as well as complying with current emission regulations. The routing of the exhaust system enables optimum footpeg positioning.

MONSTER 1100 S: THE BEST YOU CAN GET

The Monster 1100 S is a pure concentrate of lightness, power, design and exclusivity.

The 'S' features fully adjustable 43mm titanium nitride coated Öhlins forks and rising rate linkage Öhlins rear shock absorber with adjustable pre-load and return damping.

Front brake disc carriers in aluminium help reduce rotating mass, while carbon fibre cam belt covers, silencer guards and front fender reduce weight by a further 1kg (2.2lb).

The distinctive racing gold coloured 5-spoke wheels of the Monster 1100 S give it an elegant style and the same sporting look as historical Ducati racing models.

DREAM PERSONALISATION

Customise your own personal object of desire, live the dream and make your Monster a one-off with Ducati's complete range of accessories. Whether creating a whole new look, improving performance further or simply styling your own Monster, the accessory collection is intended to make your Monster experience even more rewarding. Both versions of the new Monster 1100 already come factory-personalised with removable single seat covers and neat micro-bikini fairings. From there, interchangeable tank covers offering an easy way to personalise your Monster or carbon fibre and titanium exhausts to enhance the performance and sound of the Desmo engine, you'll find endless ways to make your Monster special.

Performance-hungry owners can choose carbon fibre components to make the Monster even lighter or the Ducati Data Analyser (DDA) to analyse the performance data of the bike and rider. Alternatively, the extra comfortable touring seats and soft pannier bags for seat and tank are perfect for longer, more relaxed rides.

Dress to impress

With fresh and exclusive styles to suit every mood from racing to leisure, the Ducati apparel collection will look great on or off the new Monsters. The Monster line is modern and bold, it defines a new look and ensures maximum comfort. Essential and highly distinctive, Ducati apparel reflects the same Italian style and values as the new Monster.

New pearl white livery for Ducati Hypermotard and Multistrada

Multistrada 1100 and Hypermotard 1100

Ducati has extended its colour range by adding the stylish pearl white option to two more of its top models, the Hypermotard and Multistrada.

Following a dazzling success for the pearl white finish introduced on the Ducati 848 and Monster 696, Ducati will now offer the exciting Hypermotard 1100 and the versatile Multistrada 1100 S in this smart and exclusive livery.

For the Hypermotard 1100, pearl white creates an eye-catching and competition style contrast against its red Trellis frame and new carbon-grey finish applied to the engine outer casings.

On the 'S' version of the Multistrada 1100, the pearl white shade achieves a more sophisticated contrast against its 'racing grey' Trellis frame, the new darker carbon-grey finish of the engine outer casings and the precious carbon fibre that characterise the sporting components of this model.

Both new versions will become available during September and officially shown to the public at the International Motorcycle Show in Cologne (INTERMOT - hall 8) from 7th October.

International Hill Climb in Colorado

HYPERMOTARD VICTORY AT PIKES PEAK

Ducati is proud to announce victory for a customer spec Hypermotard at the 86th annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado.

Using a Ducati Hypermotard 1100 S, Greg Trachy won the 1200cc motorcycle class outright and took an incredible fourth over all classes. The victory, on a motorcycle in stock trim with Ducati Performance accessories, was significant as this year marked the return of stiff manufacturer competition. Against the 119 motorcycles attempting to tackle the Peak, Greg rode the Hypermotard to victory (in class) beating the overall times set by Andrea Padovani and Christian Lancellotti of the factory Aprilia team from Italy. Greg also overcame stiff competition from noteworthy riders like KTM mounted Marco Belli, the BMW of Douglas Morrison and Greg's own teammate Alexander Smith - the son of the legendary Malcolm Smith - who had a brilliant ride to fourth in his first ever race aboard a street based motorcycle.

The idea to race the Hypermotard started almost a year ago at Pike's Peak. While attending the July event, Becca Livingston visited the local Ducati dealer and saw her first Hypermotard and by October the bike she was dreaming about was hers. Becca, with her husband Paul at the controls, were adding to their thousands of miles riding two-up when they came to the realization that this motorcycle could be a contender on the mountain. Over the next few months and repeated verification from some very qualified friends, the decision was made to officially enter the Ducati in the Pike's Peak event.

Greg Trachy; 1st Place (12:06.60)

"The course conditions today were the hardest I've seen in 12 years, and that affected our times, but with the Hypermotard I never felt that I was in danger of losing the bike. When I got to 'Campgrounds' I looked back and saw nobody there, going into the dirt it swapped back and forth a couple of times so I figured it would be better to secure the class win than to risk it going for the record run. I want to thank Paul Livingston and Ducati for putting this together at the last minute and giving me such a great bike to ride!"

Alexander Malcolm Smith; 4th Place (13:04.29)

"The Hypermotard was the first street bike I had ever ridden. I was amazed how quickly I could adapt to the characteristics of the bike. It says a lot about the motorcycle when you can buy the bike and parts from your local dealer and have a bike that is ready to conquer Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The proof is in the results, with the seasoned veteran Greg Tracy dominating the class and myself finishing 4th having never ridden this type motorcycle."

Paul Livingston- Team Manager:

"It was a real honour to bring the Hypermotard to Pikes Peak and give the bike its first win in international competition. Throughout the week the Hypermotard's performance was flawless. We started with stock bikes (in fact we started with my wife's street bike!) and with the addition of readily available Ducati Performance upgrades we came up with a winning combination in only a matter of weeks. Credit for this has to go to the effort put together by FL Racing- to get us to this point so quickly was simply amazing. Greg Tracy is a seasoned veteran of the mountain and knows what it takes to get up the hill quickly, and in the most treacherous of conditions. His experience and development skills allowed us to develop the winning package. Alexander Smith is a natural talent. Having never ridden a street bike until two weeks before the race, crossing the line in fourth place under trying course conditions was a testament to his abilities. Both riders came away from this year's race eager to start next year's effort right away. We look forward to returning to Pikes Peak in 2009 to continue the Hypermotard's winning ways on the mountain."

Nuerburgring Festa DUCATI 2008
Superbike Star Troy Bayliss
Power on - no limit

20.000 celebrated the FESTA DUCATI 2008

Ducatisti from all over Europe came to the famous Nuerburgring race track to celebrate their passion for the Italian brand. Within the 1.5 days of the event 8.000 bikes entered the venue. Absolute Highlight was the meet & greet with Superbike-Star Troy Bayliss.

Köln/Nuerburgring July 5th- 6th 2008:

Germanys most famous race track, the Nuerburgring, was the perfect location for the FESTA DUCATI 2008. Before the gates to the historical paddock opened a long queue of bikers lined up, waiting for the FESTA 2008 to start. A rich show- and entertainment program as well as guided tours through the famous region Eifel wowed the crowd. In the evening the live band got the party started and hundreds of Ducatisti celebrated until the early morning.

Highlight of the event was the appearance of the current leader of the World Superbike Series, Troy Bayliss. His European fans caught the opportunity to have t-shirts, caps and even bikes signed. For most of them this was probably the last chance to meet the likable Australian personally, since Troy is going to retire from professional motorcycle racing by the end of this season.

Besides Troy a lot of famous members of the Ducati Familiy, like Giancarlo Falappa or Livio Lodi enjoyed the FESTA 2008 at Nuerburgring.

Tourist Trophy 2008: on 6th June Ducati celebrates the 30th anniversary

of Mike Hailwood's legendary win and the 50th anniversary of its participation in the TT.

Bologna, May 2008 - The 2008 edition of the Tourist Trophy, the classic road race held from 24 May to 7th June around the Isle of Man, is sure to be a special event and a great opportunity to celebrate with Ducati.

Of all the causes for celebration, the most important is undoubtedly the 30th anniversary of 2 June 1978, the date of Mike Hailwood's unforgettable race to victory on a Ducati 900. It was an achievement as longed-for as it was unexpected, because Hailwood hadn't taken part in any official motorcycling competitions for a long time. "Mike the Bike"® stunned the crowds by beating the odds-on favourite Phil Read on his Honda.

In 1958, exactly 50 years ago, Ducati officially participated in the Tourist Trophy for the first time, racing with a 125 team. The factory team, which in its TT debut claimed second place in both the riders' championship and the team rankings behind MV Agusta, was made up of legendary riders such as Luigi Taveri, Dave Chadwick, Romolo Ferri and Sammy Miller. Ducati used the race to launch its Ducati 125 Gran Prix Desmo, the first racing Ducati fitted with the Desmodromic system that immediately proved the value of engineer Fabio Taglioni's design.

During the course of its history at the Tourist Trophy, Ducati has led not only Mike Hailwood but many other equally famous riders to victory - riders such as Tony Rutter, who won the TT2 race on several occasions.

Now, for the first time, the Ducati museum in Bologna has allowed eight of its precious vintage bikes - representing milestones of the past, present and future of the Italian manufacturer - to grace the famous road route.

The following sensational bikes will be exhibited at the Tourist Trophy 2008:

125 Gran Sport "Marianna" 1956, the first bike designed by Fabio Taglioni

125 Gran Prix Desmo 1959, the first Ducati fitted with the Desmodromic system

250 Twin Cylinder Gran Prix Desmo 1960, one of the first racing bikes used by Mike Hailwood

900 SS IOM TT 1978, the bike that Mike Hailwood rode to TT victory

888 SBK 1991, one of the first 4-valve twin cylinder bikes ridden by American legend Doug Polen

916 SBK 1994, the first SBK used by Fogarty to win his first World Title

999 SBK 2006, the latest Ducati to have earned the SBK World Championship Title with Troy Bayliss

Desmosedici MotoGP 2007, the bike ridden by young Australian Casey Stoner to win the MotoGP World Championship last year.

These will be on show alongside other Ducatis from private British collections. There will also be a parade of vintage Ducati bikes on the track and special guest appearances by Ducati personalities such as Carl Fogarty, Paul Smart, Tony Rutter, Michael Rutter, Sammy Miller, Trevor Nation, James "Jamie" Whitham and Dave Hailwood, son of the great British champion.

DUCATI SWEEPS THE BOARD IN MOTOCICLISMO'S 2008 BIKE OF THE YEAR AWARDS

More than 35,000 readers of the major Italian bike magazine Motociclismo voted for their "Moto dell'anno 2008" (Bike of the Year 2008) and scored Ducati a best ever result in Sport Bike, best in Supermotard and a major result in the Naked Bike categories.

Choosing from 280 models split into 12 categories, including 125cc, Cruiser, Naked, Dual, Enduro, Supermotard, Touring, Sport Bike, Sport Touring, and three scooter categories, the public's favourite and most eagerly awaited award was for best Sport Bike. For the first time ever in the history of such awards presented by motorcycle magazines, a single manufacturer - Ducati - had recorded an unprecedented clean sweep of votes and claimed the first three places.

The Ducati 1098 took the coveted first place with the Desmosedici RR in second and the stunning new 848 filled the 'podium' with third place to achieve the previously unmatched haul of trophies. Ducati's domination of the Sport Bike category is a clear indication of the credibility and respect that the Italian manufacturer enjoys in this specific sector, traditionally a bench-mark and inspiration in the motorcycling world.

Ducati's success that evening, however, did not end there. Once more, the highly original Hypermotard took first place honours in the Supermotard category and the beautiful new Monster 696, despite being launched just a few weeks ago, took an incredible second place in the Naked Bike category. To complete the impressive haul of awards, the Multistrada scooped third place overall in the Dual category.

The award ceremony, which took place during the evening of Thursday 8 May, was held in the breathtaking surroundings of the Sforzesco Castle in Milan. In attendance were the Edisport (the Motociclismo publisher) management, Guidalberto Guidi (president of ANCMA Confindustria, the Italian industrialists' association), the participating manufacturers in the competition and host for the evening, Maddalena Corvaglia, the famous Italian showgirl who, herself, rides a Ducati Monster.

MONSTER 696

FULL STOP. FAST FORWARD

The Monster 696: the beginning of a new era.

Enhancing the "less-is-more" philosophy that has made the Monster a global legend, the Monster 696 continues to redefine expectations.

Every finely engineered element of the chassis and engine is on display allowing the true beauty of the 696 to be showcased for all to see. Naked ambition has never been so graphically described.

With its thinner waistline and wide handlebars, the Monster 696 provides unrivalled ergonomics for all riders whether cruising the concrete jungle or carving through canyon asphalt.

BALANCING ACT

The Monster 696 strikes a carefully designed balance between performance and every-day usability, appealing to a wide range of riders as a result.

With identical chassis technology to Ducati's World Championship MotoGP bike and the proven power and flexibility of the legendary Ducati L-Twin engine, the Monster 696 is as comfortable in city traffic as it is on the open road.

And that's the 696's strength; it can go where your mood takes you. Saint or sinner? You decide. The 696 delivers both.

THE BIRTH OF A LEGEND

In 1992 Ducati unveiled a new prototype that was to become an icon. Ducati's creation awed the crowds and the World's media of that year's Cologne International Motorcycle show. The 900 Monster was a motorcycle that created a truly new niche - dramatically styled, minimalist in stature yet bristling with innovative engineering solutions.

At the time Ducati's less-is-more design philosophy was at odds with the rest of the motorcycle market. Just as things were becoming more streamlined, more technical and more race-track orientated, the Monster screwed up the rule book and threw it away. This truly multi-faceted machine was clearly as much a statement of personal identity and individuality, as it was a performance machine.

The Monster's radical styling has also provided the inspiration for an entire after-market sector specialising in hot-rod parts for this legendary machine. For this reason, rarely do you see two Monsters the same. This radical and refreshing design departure also influenced other manufacturers but, as the old adage states: imitation is the highest form of flattery…

But perhaps the Monster's most ingenious ingredient is it's wide-spread appeal. Suddenly here was a motorcycle that held as much practical appeal for the experienced enthusiast as it did for the absolute newcomer…

IN THE SEAT OF THE 696

The riding position of the Monster 696 has been specifically designed to put the rider firmly in control. From the low 770mm (30.3in) seat height, the easy-to-reach handlebar position to the feather-light controls, every rider finds it easy to master.

Visually simple digital instrumentation provides an array of data on command or, at a glance, just speed and revs. Information available at the rider's fingertip control include: scheduled maintenance warning, oil temperature, air temperature, trip odometer, lap time, fuel reserve, warning light for low oil pressure, turn signals, over-rev warning, immobilizer and neutral warning light. The system is also ready for DDA (Ducati Data Analyser which is the official Ducati Data Acquisition System). All this information can be accessed without the rider having to remove a hand from the handlebar as the scroll function is ingeniously mounted on the left-hand handlebar switchgear.

The heavily tapered and deeply sculpted fuel tank cover allows maximum comfort and control. The narrowing of the 'waist' area of 696 has the same effect as lowering the seat height, making it easier for more riders to get both feet flat on the floor. Compared to previous models, the 696 has a completely new ride position allowing superior control and offering increased levels of comfort.

Careful attention to every detail has led to a substantial weight saving making the Monster 696 the lightest bike in its class at an impressive 161kg (355lb) dry.

Passenger comfort and safety are also carefully considered, with neat, under-seat grab handles moulded into the seat unit itself. This solution maximises pillion security whilst not detracting from the legendary Monster 696 styling.

ENGINEERING STRENGTH

An immensely strong but light tubular steel Trellis frame with aluminium rear sub-frame is the visual and structural backbone of the Monster 696. Delivering unparalleled rigidity yet with minimal mass, the chassis design is pure Ducati in its ingenuity and simplicity. A separate, all aluminium sub-frame saves weight and adds a pleasing continuity with the aluminium footrest hangers and matte finished swingarm.

Dynamics and aesthetics aside, the revolutionary chassis design also permits a narrow waist area and a low seat position. The steering-lock is vastly improved with a useful 64 degrees of lock-to-lock steering travel. Incredible attention to detail has gone into maximising the effective steering-lock.

The deeply contoured air intakes on the plastic tank 'skin' not only provide cool fresh air for the integral 10 litre airbox but also provide an indented area of clearance for the handlebar's switchgear on full lock.

CHASSIS COMPONENTS

Like the rest of the Ducati range, the Monster 696 is equipped with only the finest cycle parts.

Outstanding control and road-holding is provided by some of the best suspension components in the business. 43mm Showa inverted forks offer a pliant 120mm (4.7in) of finely controlled travel. At the rear, a Sachs mono-shock unit with progressive linkage provide a wide spectrum of both spring and damping permutations.

Lightweight three-spoke aluminium alloy wheels increase agility and decrease rider effort. The 3.50x17 front wheel wears a 120/60ZR tyre while the 4.50x17 rear wheel runs 160/60ZR rubber. By resisting the temptation to over-tyre the 696 for styling's sake, the end result is light, predictable and confidence inspiring steering qualities at a wide range of speeds with truly outstanding stability.

The latest in Brembo braking hardware delivers exceptional braking power front and rear, improving rider safety. At the front, 320mm floating discs are gripped by four-piston, radially mounted calipers - a 245mm floating rear disc is retarded by a twin-piston caliper. This powerful braking set-up offers unrivalled feel and feedback making the 696 safer across a broader spectrum of riding abilities.

Every carefully selected component of the Monster 696 has a net benefit to the overall light weight of the machine. The dry weight of 161kgs (355lb) has dramatic effects on not just manoeuvrability and ease of use, but also by contributing directly to increased performance, braking and acceleration.

INNOVATION

HEADLIGHT

The compact triple-parabola headlight on the Monster 696 utilises the latest optical technology and advanced construction techniques to provide one of the most diminutive lighting packages in the market place today. Viewed from the side its discrete silhouette mimics the radical shape of the fuel tank.

This attention to the abbreviated has not diminished the lighting performance, however. A broad and deep spread of light makes night-time riding far easier than you'd ever imagine.

AIRBOX AND FUEL CELL

Using the latest moulding techniques to their full has allowed not only more fuel to be carried than previous models but for the all-important airbox to hold a larger volume of cool, power-rich fresh air.

Hidden beneath a quickly detachable plastic tank 'skin' lives the fuel cell and integrated airbox. Fuel capacity is an improved 15 litres (3.8 US gal) while the airbox holds 10 litres (2.6 US gal) of filtered air.

With fuel carried between the frame rails in an innovative fuel cell, what you see as the traditional 'fuel tank' are, in fact, covers. This clever solution allows easy replacement in the event of damage and makes changing the colour and style of your Monster 696 quicker and easier than ever before.

MIRRORS

The low, sleek and aerodynamic rear-view mirrors accentuate the curves and lines of the handlebars and fuel tank outline. The mirrors give a clear view behind without interfering with the Monster 696's good looks.

LED REAR LIGHT

An LED rear light unit satisfies the minimalist, weight saving design ethos found throughout the Monster 696. The specially designed strip of LEDs are enhanced by a special diffuser lens to deliver outstanding light clarity and incredible longevity.

EXHAUST SYSTEM

Providing a deep and rich exhaust tone within current noise and emissions regulations is no mean feat, but the Monster 696 definitely provides the L-Twin sound famous of Ducati. Its bold, high-level twin mufflers also make a striking style statement.

Two pleasing advantages of the intricate high-level exhaust routing has been a healthy increase in both power and torque and a discrete positioning for the two exhaust-mounted Lambda exhaust gas sensors - so crucial for the optimisation of the fuelling and emission regulations.

The new exhaust pipe positioning also removes the effects of unwanted heat from the rider's lower body and makes the machine slimmer for optimised footrest positioning thus improving comfort.

GULLWING FORK CLAMPS

Just like Ducati's all conquering race bikes, the Monster 696 features incredibly strong gull-wing shaped fork clamps. Designed to provide immense torsional strength these engineering masterpieces dominate the front of the bike, further adding to the squat and purposeful styling.

'MONSTER' STYLE

Not only does the 696 come with its own bespoke Monster key taking the form of the tank shape, there's also a bold new 'Monster' graphic on the tank to leave bystanders in no doubt as to this beautiful machine's identity

POWER TRIP

The engine of the new 696 is an evolution of the previous 695 version. Measuring 696cc it boasts a series of updates and refinements.

Power output gets a 9% boost to 80hp (59kW) and an 11% increase in torque to 50.6 lb-ft.

This new engine continues to have the best horsepower per litre ratio of all Ducati's air-cooled units, and it ensures a smooth and powerful delivery for a relaxed but thrilling ride in all conditions.

This increase in power has been achieved by the introduction of new cylinder heads, which are now similar to the ones on the 1100 2V engine fitted to the Multistrada and Hypermotard. Bore and stroke remain identical to the previous 695 model at 88 x 57.2 mm, but the pistons and combustion chamber have been revised to optimize the fluid dynamics of the new ports.

The camshafts now rotate on bearing surfaces directly in the cylinder head and are supported by means of oil pressure. The elimination of the bearings has enabled the weight of this unit to be reduced considerably and the layout simplified.

Furthermore the cooling fins of the cylinders and the cylinder heads have a new shape, and an improved casting process allows them to be produced closer to one another so as to increase their number and improve thermal exchange.

Like its predecessor, the new Monster 696 has an advanced APTC clutch, which makes down-shifting safe and helps keep the clutch lever action light and easy, especially in urban riding where frequent stops require high use.

Like every bike in the new range, the Monster 696 also has a new scheduled maintenance programme that reduces costs for the customer.

MONSTER 696+

Throughout its long and established history, the Monster's cult following has always attracted personalisation. With Ducati's tempting in-house accessory range offering so many custom-fit parts, nearly every Monster is different.

The 696+ is a factory-personalised model featuring some neat designer touches to help you stand out from the crowd.

A beautiful single seat cover creates the clean look of a racing seat. The cover easily unclips to allow room for your favourite passenger while the neat micro-bikini fairing adds a bespoke finishing touch to the front end.
